Give Me Some Ideas on Interior Designs?

One question we often hear from people who come into our stores is: "Can you give me some ideas on interior designs?" I thought I'd share some of our interior design ideas with you here in this article.

Paint Color

Paint color has a huge impact on all who live in and visit your home. It is the most cost effective way to create positive impact. Because we spend a considerable amount of time in our homes and our homes nowadays often have large walls, we can enhance our living spaces by bringing in warmth, beauty and joy into a home. Painting the five walls in a room, the fifth wall being your ceiling, will definitely provide an impact to the look and feel of the space with the least amount of expense and effort.

So often people get overwhelmed with the magnitude of paint choices on the market today.  I designed Authentic Home COLOR Paint™ to help you overcome you fear of selecting a paint color. That’s because we understand that too many choices are a curse and that most homes can be designed around a few beautiful, simple colors. The Authentic Home COLOR Paint is designed in three vigenettes to evoke moods and feelings. The palettes help you stay focused which lessons any frustration around choosing the right paint colors for your home.

Window Coverings

Many times I have walked into people's homes for the first time and experienced bare windows. I often hear that the view or sunlight is a priority over dressing a room’s windows. Dressing your windows will bring cohesiveness to the look of the entire space. Many design elements such as stationary drapery panels or sheer roman shades can be added to complete the room's feel without detracting from your view or sunlight. After dark, the black box look of bare windows is neither appealing nor warm. Try to imagine the look you want to achieve in your space and take baby steps in working towards that look. There are tremendous numbers of options available today and with some guidance you can bring the look you want to reality.

Interior Arranging

After the painting is complete and the windows are dressed, it is time to arrange your living space. What many people overlook: you already have most of the elements for the room arrangement right in your own home.  When we are hired to provide interior arranging services we spend time going through clients attics, basements, and garages to uncover those hidden treasures that you forgot you had. Sometimes we find beautiful antiques that just need to be dusted off and shown in the right setting.

An easy and inexpensive way to refresh your room's look is to change out or purchase new artwork, lampshades or pillows. Spend the time updating your family photos and place them in similar color frames. Add in some seasonal touches like silk flowers and candles to your living room or bedroom.  Sometimes all it takes is changing the little things that can have the biggest impact on you and your family. Make it authentic to yourself and enjoy!

Room Flow

The first step in freshening up your living space is to take a step back and pretend that you are a first time visitor in your home. Stand at the front doorway and look around to see where your eye goes. Are your eyes looking at something appealing or are they looking straight into a window that has an ugly view of the backyard. Work towards having a pleasing welcome to your home by camouflaging spaces that are not appealing to the eye. Plants can do wonders to help hide unwanted areas or act as fillers for spaces. Moving furniture or setting up small vignettes of artwork on the wall can also help.

Creating a conversation area is the next step. Look carefully at the flow of the room.  How do people get from the front door to say the kitchen area? Once you determine this, you can decide where your conversation area will be. Arrange your furniture so that you need to enter into the conversation area or zone. Couches do not have to be alongside a wall or in front of a window. For example, experiment with placing your couch in front of the focal point like your fireplace. Also try using the couch, which often times is the largest piece of furniture, as a divider between two conversation areas or try placing it on an angle. Once the couch is set then you can place the chairs, tables, and lamps close to the couch ensuring that you maintain a conversation area or zone.

Lighting

Lighting is an important design element that is often overlooked. Having sufficient light for reading is critical and most times lamps with shades that project the light down instead of up are best. Also the lamp wattage is important to note when determining the number of lamps to be used in the space. I also recommend using soft pink light bulbs instead of white ones.  The pink sends a warmer light into the room. Try it once and you won't use a white bulb again.
